Silicone Made Even Better!

Over the past year or so I have been able to review a lot of wonderful (and a few not so wonderful) silicone baking and cooking pieces. It's amazing what they can do with that stuff and how versatile it is. But the one major complaint I have, especially with silicone ice cube trays, is how they are a little too flexible.

Practico Kitchen has come to my rescue, and I for one am very happy about it! They have made the Superb Cube 1.4 Inch Cube Silicone Ice Cube Tray with EZ-Release & No-Spill Steel Reinforced Rim. All I want to say is YAY!!

This ice cube tray is fantastic! It has all the benefits of silicone with the flexibility and ease of removing the cubes, but it also has the stability and does not wiggle around all over the place as you try to go from the faucet to the freezer with it and then try to find a stable place to put it so it does not bend or warp or spill.

I really like the size of this ice cube tray. There are 9 cubes in it and each of the cubes are 1.4", which is a good size to fit in pretty much every glass we own. The cubes last for a good amount of time without watering down your beverage.

The ice cube tray is safe for not just the freezer too. Like almost all silicone, this one can go in the oven up to 428°. The size of the compartments are a little small for most baking, but they would work great to make little petite fours for special occasions and they are a great size for dog treats!

The best thing about this ice cube tray is the steel reinforcement in the top edge. It really makes all the difference in good silicone to amazing silicone! You can hold the tray securely knowing it is not going to bend or shift or wiggle around. I hope Practico Kitchen makes a lot more pieces to their collection!

Super Large Silicone Molds That Can Be Used In Lots Of Ways

I have featured several silicone products here on the blog. I love using silicone, the ease, the multi- function of the pieces, and the value.

Recently I got the chance to try out another kind of silicone Ice Cube Mold from Practico Kitchen. This thing is really big!

The ice cube mold has four compartments. Each one makes a cube that is 2.25" by 2.25". Those are some really big ice cubes! When you toss the ice in a cup it takes quite a while for one of those cubes to melt. The cubes are so big that we don't have very many glasses that they fit in, but we like the cubes!

The silicone is BPA-free and FDA approved, so they are safe to use for all kinds of things. You can use them for ice cubes, or you can freeze other things in them. It would be great for portions of homemade baby food or toddler food. Freeze the food in the mold and then pop them out into a freezer bag and label. What a great way to save money!

You can also use the molds for mixing up Jello Wigglers. The silicone releases the Jello easily and it makes a fun treat. I even thought about freezing small portions of sherbet or special flavored things to then put in a punch bowl. They would look neat floating and then help flavor the punch too.

The cubes are not as easy to get out of the mold, unlike smaller molds. I found letting the mold sit on the counter for a minute helps release things better. They are dishwasher safe or can be hand washed.

These are nice molds that can be used in a lot of different ways.

Keeping Food Fresh With Just A Little Push

I am not a big fan of trying to cover bowls and dishes with plastic wrap or foil. It just never seems to really cover the food that well and no matter how hard you try to get a good seal, it just doesn't seem to work that well.

Practico Kitchen has some nifty EZ Lid Silicone Lids and Food Covers that really helps cover and protect food. I really, really like these covers.

Here's how they work. You simply place the cover on the bowl making sure it reaches the edge or hangs over some. Push down in the center of the cover and a tight seal is created. Think of it like a suction cup. The cover creates a vacuum and seals the lid to the bowl. The neat thing is that the bowl does not even have to be completely round. I have tried them on round and oval shaped bowls and the seal is really tight on both.

In fact the seal is usually strong enough to be able to pick the bowl up with just the lid. Now I don't recommend doing this all the time, but it really does work. In fact I have been really amazed at how well the covers stay on bowls and how tight the seal is. Leftovers last longer in the fridge and I feel good about not wasting food. Who can afford doing that?

The covers are wonderful for heating and re-heating food in the microwave. I don't seal the cover tight on the bowl to allow some of the steam to be released from the cooking process. But the covers keep food from splattering all over the microwave and making a big mess! I've also used the small lid to keep my cup of coffee nice and hot. It's super handy for that!

The covers come with small holes so you can hang them up for easy storage, but they also take up very little room in a drawer. I keep them in our towel and pot holder drawer so they are always ready to use. They are easy to clean too. Just toss them in the sink with your other dishes or on the top rack of the dishwasher!

These would be a great addition to your kitchen. You can purchase your own EZ Lid Silicone Lids and Food Covers HERE!
