The Hot Dog Slic'r

When it comes to feeding your kids, it can be a struggle to gt them to eat. They don't always want to cooperate with you. Sometimes you need to get creative and let them have a little fun to help them enjoy their meal and make your life a little easier.

The Hot Dog Slic'r is one of those things that can help you give your kids some fun while they eat. This little dog is a fun way to take your average hot dog and cut it into small, bite sized pieces.

Here's how it works, Take a hot dog, cold or hot, place it in the base. The second piece is placed over it and you push down. This cuts the hot dog into small pieces. You can serve it in the base or you can place the pieces on a plate. If you serve it in the base, the small bowl in the front of the dog's face can be used as a dipping bowl for your child's favorite condiment.

The "blades" of the Slic'r are not sharp, so it is safe to use, and even your kids could use it safely. It cuts okay, but does take some wiggling and a good push to cut all the way through, although lining it up just right over the base does not always work too well. It took me 3 hot dogs to finally get it lined up just right. My husband did not complain about that though. LOL!

It wasn't easy to cut through the hot dogs but not too bad to use except the hot dogs do not want to stay in the base all nice in a row to use it like a plate/bowl. The pieces want to fall out every time, like in the picture above. I couldn't push them back through the holes and it is not easy to get them all back in it to serve it that way. Much easier to just place them on a plate or in a bowl. You can still use the little bowl in front of the dog as a condiment dish, but it isn't quite the same thing as having the hot dog in it too. Maybe after a few more cuts, I'll get the pieces to stay.

This is a fun thing for you to use with your kids to help make meal time a little more fun for them. The Slic'r washes on the top rack of the dishwasher or you can do it by hand, and it's easy to store. For me it seems to be more work to use than it should be, but if it is fun for the kids, I'm okay with that.

Incessant Divagation

“SOON WE'LL BE GOBBLING THE GOBBLER”
by Rick Jones, Husband of the Minister's Wife

I feel a bit hypocritical mentioning the word “Christmas” in this article. It's not because some folks consider it a politically incorrect term – freedom of speech, despite the squawking of the Thought Police, basically means that I have the right to say what I want to say, not that they have the right to hear only what they want to hear. And freedom of religion doesn't guarantee freedom from hearing about religion.

But I have a general policy of not focusing attention on Christmas until after Thanksgiving is done. I'm bothered by Christmas-themed commercials appearing at the beginning of November. These days, two signs that Thanksgiving is approaching are [1] Christmas merchandise floods the stores and [2] Halloween candy is on sale at 75% off. I used to like that second sign, but that was before I became diabetic. And it may be one reason why I became diabetic. When I was a kid, I didn't go trick-or-treating with a little plastic pumpkin-shaped pail. I used a big paper grocery sack, and stayed out until it was about 2/3 filled. If necessary, I'd go back home and set out again in a second costume. Later that night I observed the “fall asleep while eating candy from the bag by my bed” tradition. That was followed by the “wake up thinking I'm going to throw up” tradition the following morning, at which time I swore to myself that I'd never indulge in such gluttony again. And. I always kept that promise . . . until the following October . . .

I also remember Thanksgiving Day parades where the very last float featured jolly old Saint Nicholas, who was enough of a gentleman to give Tom Turkey and the Pilgrims time to shine before making an appearance. Now, he invades the scene so quickly you can barely find a pumpkin pie for all the candy cane displays. The Great Pumpkin and Santa Claus are warring like Coke and Pepsi; Tom Turkey gets trampled in the frenzy.

The Cola Wars are a fitting analogy for the Thanksgiving situation. I don't care for Halloween any more, so it's Pepsi. I like Christmas, and it's still the more popular holiday of the two, so it's Coke. But Thanksgiving is like a third brand, let's say Royal Crown [better known as “RC”]: It can't garner as much shelf space, but I prefer it to the “big boys”.

There is a quality to Thanksgiving that isn't emphasized in the other two holidays. All three talk about receiving great bounty – that is, getting stuff. All three feature food – that is, getting stuffed. And none of them give more than a token nod to eating responsibly [which is why I hate seeing the scale at the doctor's office in January]. But Thanksgiving, well, it still has the emphasis on GIVING THANKS. On viewing bounty as a blessing, not an entitlement. On expressing not only gladness, but gratitude. On acknowledging the Giver, not just the gifts. So far, that hasn't been lost in all the “extras” attached to the day. We've all heard the fuss about whether or not to say “Merry Christmas” or “Season's Greetings”, but I am bothered when people refer to Thanksgiving as “Turkey Day” –

Not that I aggressively campaign to keep Thanksgiving “pure”. I enjoy watching football while going back for thirds [or fourths] on turkey – and I'm thankful that our Founding Fathers didn't ratify Ben Franklin's suggestion that our national bird should be the turkey instead of the bald eagle. Then turkeys may have become a protected species and eating them would be illegal. It does seem a bit ironic that in the United States we can kill and eat all the turkeys we want to, and there are plenty if them. But the bald eagle, with official protection from the federal government, was close to dying out in the continental U. S. in the 1950s. Not that the Pilgrims ate much turkey. The first-hand accounts of early Thanksgiving meals include menu items like roasted carrier pigeon and smoked eel. I think I prefer the holiday mascot being Tom Turkey rather than Edgar Eel.

Looking For That One Diet Plan That Will REALLY Help?

How confused have you been sometimes about what is good to eat, what is not? One day something is okay, the next it isn't. Then there are all the "super foods" that most you really have not learned about, but only have seen bits and pieces and everyone says you nee to eat it, yet alone how to cook with them. On top of that there are new good-for-you foods becoming popular every day and it can get really really confusing on what you should and should not eat and feed your family. Then there are all the kinds of diets you can do, vegan, macrobiotic, low-fat, low carb, no carb, gluten free, and on and on.

So what do you do?

First calm down! I know how you can feel. I've felt that way sometimes. What I grew up with being good for me is not so good now and I am slowly (sometimes slower than I would like to admit) learning how to change old bad habits and create new good habits. But one thing that has recently helped me a lot are two books available that I am really enjoying!

Trim Healthy Mama Plan and Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook, both are books that can help you make sense of new foods, old foods, super foods and more. The authors of the books really get down to basics and show you (and me) step by step how to eat healthier and live healthier.

Here's a little about the two books:
Authors Serene Allison and Pearl Barrett provide a comprehensive, Biblically-sound, effective and delicious way to eat for health and weight loss.
Written with humor and thorough research, these books will entertain, enlighten and encourage women (and men!) to feed their bodies and souls the way God created us to thrive.
Separating scientific realities from the fads, this book addresses the diverse needs of adults and growing children.
You'll never look at food and health the same way again.
Watch this video and it will really help you understand the authors and the whole idea behind Trim Healthy Mama.

Serene and Pearl connect with you throughout both books by being real and honest about things. They know how hard it is to eat healthy and enjoy your food. Now I am not going to say that I have lost a ton of weight and changed my diet so much that I am absolutely healthy because of reading these books and using the recipes. That would not be honest with you.

What I will say is that by reading these books and slowly implementing things from them I am making a difference in my life. I am seeing changes, albeit small for now, and I am happy with that. It took me years to get where I am and I have no problem taking my time to make things really stick. I don't want to make drastic changes that only fade away after a while. I want to make long-term life changing habits by learning from these two and implementing those things in my daily life from now on.

The Trim Healthy Mama Plan book starts with the whys of eating healthy and how so many of the diets out there really don't help because they are missing things or don't keep you satisfied. The book breaks down why we need to eat and what we really need to eat to stay alive and healthy. It comes down to some very basic things and builds from there, step by step, you learn how to rethink how you eat and what you eat. And Serene and Pearl help you in two ways, to lose weight or to maintain weight and feel good and satisfied! I wish I could explain the whole process to you, but then I would have to copy the book. It's a fantastic plan and it makes sense. It's not difficult and it's not overwhelming! It just makes sense!

Once you learn the plan or start working through it, the second book really helps a lot! The Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook is amazing! Here's a little about it:
THM is not about eating tiny portions or ‘diet’ foods. Enjoy a taste of delicious Trim Healthy Mama food with these recipes! We think you’ll agree that eating healthy doesn’t need to be boring, bland, or tasteless.
There are so many wonderful recipes (over 350) that you will be able to use this cookbook for many years to come. The chapters are; One Pot Meals, Hearty Mains and Sides, Sunrise Eats, Sweet Treats, Beverages, and All Things Smooth and Crunchy. Each of those chapters have further breakdowns to help you find what you want to try. I have had more fun going through this cookbook finding yummy foods to try out and enjoying every minute of it. They explain specifics and unusual things you might find in the recipes in the book too. Plus the step by step instructions are easy to follow.

The Trim Healthy Mama website has all kinds of information to help you get started, to keep you motivated and to share with your friends and family. There are video helps, testimonials, a sweetener conversion chart, and more. Serene and Pearl really do want to help people live a healthy life and enjoy their food while they do.

And just for all of you, here are 8 of the recipes from the book in a PDF format that you can download and check out even before you get the book! Click HERE to get the recipes and HERE to get the shopping list for the recipes!

One of my favorite things is the free discussion guide they offer for Bible study groups and non-Bible study groups. Both are free to download in a PDF format and each one walks through the book chapter by chapter with though provoking questions to help you really start changing how you think and live with food!

You can purchase one or both of the books, and I recommend both highly, HERE! You can choose the retailer you want and order directly from them.
