The Prayer Bible ~ Perfect For Your Reading Children

There are times when it is hard to explain to kids certain things. I know as a parent, I have found many subjects over the years that I just can't get the right words out to explain different concepts and ideas to my kids. I've always been thankful to find something that could help me with that.

This book is one of those things I wish I had when my boys were young.

The Prayer Bible for Children helps children develop a heart for prayer, it helps them to understand what prayer really is and how important it is. They can learn the Bible through the popular ICB translation, the simple translation most children can read and understand.

There are tons of special pages throughout the whole Bible that highlight the most famous and beloved prayers featured in the Bible, from Abraham's prayers to the Lord, to Jesus praying before his crucifixion, to the way Paul prayed for the churches he planted, and so many more. This Bible will teach young readers about a God who loves to hear from them, His children and loves answering their prayers.

I was very impressed with the subjects covered throughout, questions that kids ask a lot, the whys and why-nots, the things that we can't always come up with an easy answer for. As your kids use this Bible, I would highly recommend you talk to them about what they are learning and share with them how you learned about the same things growing up. This is an excellent Bible to encourage the whole family.

Special features include 160 pages of prayer articles throughout the text and 64 four-color pages featuring poem prayers, Scripture prayers and engaging Kids' Q&A's. The full page prayer articles will help children learn how to pray, to not fear prayer, and to see within the Word how and when God's people prayed. The colorful decorative pages will feature kid-friendly scripture prayers, topical poem prayers and fun questions and answers kids have about prayer.

This Bible includes a pocket with a prayer journal for children to record their own prayers and is attached to the back cover of the Bible. It is removable, so it doesn't have to remain there unless you want it to. I think it is a great way to encourage kids in a regular and consistent prayer time each day.

The Bible is recommended for children ages 6-10, but I think there are some things you can take form this Bible and start teaching your little ones even earlier than 6. We started teaching our boys about prayer from the moment they came home from the hospital.

You also have a choice in cover, blue with nifty gold hot air balloons or pink with flowers and a wreath.

Incessant Divagation

“MY MOTHER-IN-LAW IS ABSENT”
by Rick Jones, Son-in-Law of the Mother of the Minister's Wife

My mother-in-law passed away. Lois and I were discussing epitaphs . . .

That's not the opening to a bad joke. Lois's mother passed away on the morning of Friday, October 23rd. Ironically, that same morning I was telling Lois about some epitaphs I'd read while preparing for what I intended to be this edition of “Incessant Divagation”. That article will be out next Tuesday. This one is out early, as we're preparing for a 500 mile trip to attend a funeral.

When I heard the voice of Lois's brother on the phone, asking to speak with his sister, I had a premonition. I'm not a man who puts much credence in stories of psychic impressions, but as I gave the phone to Lois I felt certain that her mother had died. I was right. People who know much about me know that I enjoy being right – but there was no pleasure in it this time. I'm grateful to God that I was home and could be with Lois when she heard the news.

Patricia Wing was born Patricia Fairfield on June 12, 1926, in Cuba, New York. Her obituary tells me she enjoyed gardening, needlepoint, church functions and eating out. I didn't know much about her. Yes, I learned a significant amount of biographical information over the years as Lois spoke of her mother, but we didn't have much personal interaction. I do know that she approved of me before Lois and I became married. I joked that this proved she was a very wise and perceptive woman. Seriously, I'm not sure why she gave Lois a “favorable review” but I truly believe that if she had not, Lois would not have accepted my marriage proposal. Lois valued her mother's opinion. That makes Lois perceptive.

I'm not in a mood to share funny stories about my mother-in-law. I do want to share that she took her relationship with God – her “religion”, and she wasn't ashamed to be identified as a “religious” person – very seriously. That doesn't mean that she was harsh with people who didn't think or act like she did. She was very strict with herself, and her love of God inspired her to forgive and help people around her, whether or not they lived by her standards. She was one of those people who, when she said she'd pray for you, was making a commitment, not tossing out a quickly forgotten platitude. And if you knew she was praying, you felt like something significant was taking place on your behalf.

Eighty-nine years of life gave her plenty of opportunity to compare events in her life with principles she studied from the Bible. She grew strong in her faith, seeing personally that God had spoken truth and fulfilled His promises.

Now that she has died, I believe she is experiencing a condition Paul wrote about: that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. I'm sure she's having a wonderful time, and while we miss her, my personal opinion is that given her circumstances, she has better things to do than miss us. She had some rough times in her life, and the last couple of years were not pleasant, but those troubles are now far outweighed by the blessings of her current surroundings.

“LOOKING FOR A SIGN”
by Rick Jones, Husband of the Minister's Wife

Last week I promised to share messages from the sign in front of Goodold Baptist Church. There were plenty of common messages announcing special meetings or saying things like “JESUS IS RISEN”, but the offbeat ones had a special place for me. Not all of the examples here were original with me. I found many ideas online. Just search for “funny church sign messages” [but finish reading this article first].

Making A Deposit On A Promise

For years now I have seen how important it is to keep your word. I think we all know how important that really is, but sometimes it really comes home in a unique way.

Many years ago I met a wonderful women. She was not a typical woman. She was her own self and was not afraid to be who she was. You might say she was a little quirky, but it was a very good quirky. To give you an idea of what I mean, when she married her second husband she and her husband went on their honeymoon with two other people, my mother-in-law being one of them. Telling you the whys and all about that would take too long, but it was something she, her husband and everyone else enjoyed a lot. Oh and she was in her 60's when this honeymoon took place.

This sweet and unusual lady was named LaBerta! I love her name and when she got married again he last name became LaTurner. LaBerta LaTurner. Isn't that just the neatest name? And it fit her wonderful quirky personality too. But what was even more important and wonderful about her was her testimony. She was a powerful woman of God. She loved the Lord and had no fear in telling others about Him and all He had done in her life. I loved that about her and through that testimony she taught me a very important lesson.

I'm sure many of you (hopefully all of you) know the importance of prayer. In any Believer's life it is vital. It can make a huge difference in how we live our daily lives and with our relationships with other people. But LaBerta taught me something about prayer I had never thought about before and have never forgotten since.

I need to tell you that LaBerta was an amazing prayer warrior. If you wanted someone to faithfully pray for things going on in your life she was the person to go to. She was consistent in her prayer life and she followed up. If you asked her to pray for something she would come to you later to find out what the answer to that prayer was. She believed in and practiced the power of prayer! I learned a lot from her by that example, but the one small step she took that impressed me the most was what she would do when you asked her to pray.

This small step became very evident to me the first time I asked her to pray for me. We were standing in the foyer of a church. She noticed that I was not doing very well (long story) and asked if she could pray for me. I told her what was going on briefly and she said she would pray. That's when the most amazing thing happened. She stopped right there in the midst of a lot of other people, took my hand and started praying. It did not matter who else heard or saw, she just started praying. I can't tell you how special that was to me.

But it was not the only time she did that for me or my family. If we ran into her at the grocery store she would stop right there and pray for us. If we talked on the phone with her she would end the conversation with a prayer. If we met in the post office she would pray for anything and anyone. Wherever she was, if you needed prayer she would pray for you right then and there. She did not care who else saw what was going on or who heard, not that she prayed loudly. Her concern was to pray and pray immediately.

I had a chance one time to ask her about it. She kinda snickered and said she thought that telling someone you would pray for them was a promise. Promises were something to be taken very seriously, as seriously as God takes His promises to us. She told me that when she became a Christian she learned how important promises really are to God and since saying you would pray for someone was in her mind a promise (and I agree with her) she had to make sure she kept it. So when someone asked her to pray she was going to make a deposit on a promise and she did every single time.

I treasured that thought and mulled it over in my mind for quite a while. I had never heard of anyone thinking about praying for someone in that way before. It made a huge impact on me. LaBetra taught me something that to this day has stuck with me and has changed how I see prayer and my prayer life.

Do I do the same thing as boldly as LaBerta did? No, I wish I did. But I have done my best to keep the promise I make to people when I say I will pray for them? Yes! Prayer is a vital part of my life and it was forever changed by a small lesson from LaBerta LaTurner.

Thank you Berta!!
