Family Favorite, Southern Pork Barbecue!! Yum!!
There are a few recipes I have that are always a hit with my guys (and guests) and this is one of them. I got this from my Mother-in-law many years ago and she got it from an elderly southern lady. She said the recipe had been in her family for some time. From the first time I made it to now my guys are always thrilled. Lots of times when they have friends visit or come home from school this is the one dish they ask me to make the most, well that and cheesecake. So I thought I would share it with you. Please remember this is not typical barbecue. There is no tomato based anything in it. When I make this recipe I almost always double it my guys love it so much. It also freezes up well too.
Southern Pork Barbecue
Ingredients:
6-7 lb. fresh pork shoulder
5 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp rounded, crushed red pepper
2-3 tbsp prepared mustard (the kind you use on a hot dog!)
1 c white vinegar
1 tbsp salt
1 tsp thyme
3 shakes hot sauce (I usually use more for my gang)
Directions:
Preheat your oven to 325 degrees.
Trim the fat and any skin from the pork. Cut the meat from the bone into cubes aprox 1-2 inches square. Place bone and meat in a large roaster.
Mix the remaining ingredients well. Pour mixture over the meat. Cover with foil making sure the foil does not touch the meat (the vinegar will eat through the aluminum!).
Bake the meat for 2 1/2 hours.
Take out the bone and remove any meat that might be still on it.
Place the roaster on the stove top over a low heat and cook until the juice is almost gone, stirring occasionally with a fork to break the meat apart, aprox 1 hour. Watch carefully to not let too much juice cook off and let the meat dry out.
(here is a hint I do. I take the meat out of the juice and fork it apart on my cutting board. It is quicker and easier to make sure you get all the pieces broken up. You can also catch any pieces of fat that may have been in the meat.)
Serve the meat on buns and enjoy!
Here are a few of the steps:
This is my 10+ lb roast cut up. Notice I did leave some of the fat veins in it. It really does help flavor the meat, so don't be afraid to leave it in! The roasting pan here is large enough to fit a 20 lb turkey, so it's big and deep. I also doubled the sauce ingredients for this size cut of meat.
This is after adding the vinegar mixture. Notice my hot sauce of choice, Frank's Red Hot! Love that stuff!!
Here is how I tent my roasting pan. Remember to keep the foil off the meat. If you don't, you will end up with pitting on the foil and possibly a slight metal taste to some of the meat. Yuck!!
Here is the yummy mixture after the 2 1/2 hours of baking. Oh man does the house smell good! My husband said it is one of his favorite smells. Wonder if I could convince Glade? LOL!!
Cooking it down after I forked all the meat apart. I let it cook slowly, but it is rough because the guys are drooling now and really want to get into it. They sometimes sneak in during this step and sneak a taste!
After almost all the liquid is cooked in. While I am cooking I take the time to skim off any excess fat and watch for small pieces of fat. But make sure you don't let it cook off too much. That juice helps add lots of flavor to the bun. Think of it as barbecue au jus!
The bun to the left is my husband's and to the right is mine. He says the traditional southern way to enjoy this sandwich is to add coleslaw. I guess I need to trust him since he was born and raised in the south! He also likes to add mustard and a couple more shakes of hot sauce. Me, I like mine just plain as plain can be. That's enough flavor for me.
I usually serve this with potato salad and fresh carrots. That's just our tradition, but the occasional chip & pickle has been known to land on the plate with it.
This is not a spur of the moment recipe obviously, but it is one I can pretty much guarantee your family will love. One of my best friends has been know to make this and then she will add traditional barbecue sauce to it. I've tried it and it really is pretty good that way. It tames down the slight vinegary taste and zing from the hot sauce & peppers. Hope you enjoy it as much as we have!

Mmmmmmm!! Ghirardelli Chocolate!
I am a chocolate lover. I truly believe that manna in Heaven will be chocolate with a side of peanut butter and we will be drinking coffee. Seriously, I really do. So when I got the opportunity to try Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares from SheSpeaks in their new flavor Milk & Truffle I jumped at it.
I have tried pretty much all the chocolate flavors Ghirardelli offers in almost every form they offer them in (I love their cocoa powder for baking), but this one ranks right up there at the top. I've always enjoyed truffles and when I tried this I was not disappointed at all. The chocolate coating is just the right texture and flavor to compliment the truffle filling. And it is not to rich either. I've had a few truffles that have been good but no way did I want to eat more than one. These, honestly, I could have eaten the whole bag at once! There was a nice richness to them, but nothing to overpower your taste buds.
I think Ghirardelli got this flavor just right. If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend you do in the very near future. I can see this quickly becoming a very popular flavor for Ghirardelli! One of their logos is "Reward yourself today". Well this certainly is on thing that fits that to a tee!
What are you waiting for? You know you want some!
I received a free sample of Ghirardelli Chocolate Squares Milk & Truffle from SheSpeaks to sample and review. I was not compensated in any way. The opinions expressed here are mine and mine alone. I wan not influenced by any one else.

Cookin' Recipe Organizer Review & Giveaway
I think I have found a new best friend! For years I have enjoyed
recipes and finding things I know my family will love. Now I am NOT a
cookbook collector at all, but I am a recipe saver. I find one or two
here and there and have been know to tear a few now and then out of
magazines. The problem has always been that I tend to misplace them once
I tear them out or they all gt accumulated in a file and I have an
awful time finding just the one I want.
Well I am loving my new software program! It can do so much and I could not be happier!! It's Cookin' Recipe Organizer. It is the neatest program ever. I am having so much fun organizing and sorting my recipes. It has mad a huge difference in my life. I had tons of recipes saved on my computer and now they are all in one very organized place. It is also helping me get all the loose saved recipes organized. It is so nice to finally throw away all those loose papers and know that I can find just what I want when I want!
But I can also find new recipes online and add them right to my files in the software. I don't have to click and paste and print off a bunch of extra stuff. Just a few little clicks and it is added to my cookbook and it is there for as long as I want it. No mo=re searching over and over to find the site where I found that neat recipe from. It's right at my fingertips all the time.
The coolest thing is being able to make my own cookbook. I have been wanting to do that for years. Our family has been saving and sharing recipes for a long time and now I can have them all in one place and actually get a printed complete cookbook! I can't wait to make one for everyone for Christmas this year. I know it is something they will all enjoy having and refer to often.
But there is more. You can even organize and plan menus using the software. It is so easy and all the recipes as well as what you need for them are at your finger tips. I'm still learning how to use this part of the program, but I have been thrilled with how easy it is to pull any of my recipes out and use it for my menus.
Don't believe me? All this program can do sounds almost too good to be true. Well check out this video. It shows in just a few minutes all that you can do with the Cookin' Recipe Organizer software.
The makers of the software have been kind enough to give me a special discount for all of you. You can save 50%. When you order your software use this code; mb-minwife.
But one of my lucky readers will be able to win their own copy of Cookin' Recipe Organizer an $80 value! Just use the Rafflecopter form bellow. Remember to give it a minute to load!
I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Mom Blog Society. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers. http://momblogsociety.com

It's a Star Wars Marathon!!
I am so excited! I recently received something I have been waiting for a long time. I got Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray. Best thing is I got it from Bzz! I love being a Bzz Agent.

What's Bzz Agent? Well it is a site you can join for free and you get to test products, write reviews and tell everyone and anyone you know (and some you don't) all about the products. Best part, it is all free. Bzz has hooked up with some awesome companies to provide some really neat products for their Agents to test out. How much you get to test depends on how much you take part. So get you out of it what you put into it!
When I got chosen to review the Star Wars Saga I was thrilled. My whole family loves Star Wars. Can't even tell you how many times we have watched it. Guess I'm telling you my age here, but I remember going to watch it when it first came out way back when! What a thrill it was!
We have really been enjoying the Blu-ray. All the little extras and how great the picture looks is well worth it. It's been a lot of fun to go through and see the special features, learn some neat new things (yes, we're kinda nerdy here) and just enjoy it as a family. We have even included a couple of friends to watch too. So it has become an extended marathon and so much fun!
I can't really figure out what is my favorite part of the movies, but I really do love that scene where Yoda comes alive to fight. Boy is that neat to see him bouncing around all over the place. And all the special features are so good that I really can't pick a favorite of them. There really are a lot of them!!
You can find Star Wars: The Complete Saga at Amazon.com and other fine retailers. It is well worth the money!! And make sure you check out Bzz Agent! I know you'll enjoy it. What are you waiting for?

ila Safety With Style Giveaway
I live in a small town just outside of a larger city. And that larger city is not too far from Gary, IN and Chicago. To say the least, crime in our area is high. It has been something new for me to deal with since moving here 8 years ago. I was used to small, rural town and country life before now. Learning to deal with the difference has been a small challenge, but do-able. I've made some small changes and some big ones.
Recently I was given something that I just love having now. It was the ila Pebble Personal Alarm. This thing is wonderful! It is so easy to have with me all the time. It looks like a part of my key chain, but man, does it ever pack a wallop! When you pull a small clip out it makes a piercing sound. In fact it is 130 decibels. That's loud! It's bound to get any one's and every one's attention. I really love having it with me and feel safer when I do! And it's cute too!
I was so thrilled with it I contacted the company to let them know. They were so nice to me and offered to let me review several of their other products and tell you all about them!
They sent me the Portable Door Alarm Wedge, It is so neat! You just wedge it under your door and if someone tries to open or force the door the pressure sensitive switch goes off and a 130 decibel alarm sounds. This is such a nice things to have when traveling or for someone who unfortunately has to live in a not so nice part of town! I gave mine to an elderly lady who just didn't feel safe in her home. She told me recently that every night when she goes to bed or when she comes home from being out she wedges that alarm under her door and feels so much safer. It gives her peace of mind! That's priceless!
The third product they sent me was the Handbag Hook. This is the neatest thing!! It looks like a small makeup compact and takes up very little space in my purse. It also has a little mirror in it which has come in handy from time to time. The first time I tried to open it to hang up my purse I had a little trouble, but after that it was easy peasy! It is so nice to have my purse where I know it should be and not tucked under a chair where someone could easily grab it without me knowing. I'm also not kicking it around or other people aren't kicking it around under the table or mushing it between several people on a bench seat. Those little metal sections in the picture above just wrap around the disc when you are done with it and they stay in place till you need it again.
I also recommend you check out the website for their Top 10 Safety Tips. There are some very good and common sense things there that will help anyone feel safer when they are out and about! I thought I was a fairly safe person and learned a lot there! Don't ever take your personal safety for granted! You never know in today's world what or who is out there wanting to hurt you or take something from you. ila can give you a little more peace of mind!
ila has also been kind enough to offer one of my readers their own Pebble Personal Alarm. All you have to do to enter is to fill in the Rafflecopter bellow. Remember to be patient, sometimes it loads slow!

Happy Doggies!!
Time for a confession. I'm a cat lover. That's not the confession though. I almost, yes almost hate to admit it, but I am slowly becoming a dog lover.
I can't believe I just said that!
A little over 3 years ago we made a big decision. At the time our youngest son was working a full-time job and gone a lot. Our oldest son was not living with us. And my husband was working as a Pastor and a part-time job that kept him away from home a lot. We were like ships passing throughout the day.
Well because of that and the area we live in I just didn't feel safe at home alone. And I was home alone a lot! There had been several break-ins in the neighborhood and we had seen some "odd" people on our property, you know, the kind that just make the hair on the back of your neck stick up.
So we got a dog, not just any dog, a really, really big dog. Of course he was just a puppy at the time, but he grew and he grew and then when we thought maybe he was done he grew some more. Now our Newfoundland Golden Retriever mix weighs in at a heft 99 pounds. The really neat thing about him is that he has a bark that matches his size. I feel much safer at home now.
Well a year after we got Bender we got a second addition to the family. He's not so big, in fact I think you would call him a dog-wanna-be. Well at least my friends call him that. Our oldest son had moved in with us by then and his friend gave him this sweet little puppy who weighed under 3 pounds. He now weighs in at a whopping 9 pounds and is a little pistol! He's a Chorkie, or Chihuahua Yorkie mix who is named Scruffy.
Over the 3 years I have learned to really love my fur babies! I really can't imagine life without them now and even Scruffy's little bark can help me feel safer around here. He can be a pretty boisterous little guy when he doesn't like someone. Of course he does it all hiding behind Bender!!
Anyway, I love to spoil them, so I thought I would share a great recipe I have for homemade dog treats. I also have to admit, they don't taste to bad to humans either!
Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits
Ingredients:
2 3/4 cup whole wheat flour
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3 tbsp. Dark Brown Sugar
1 tsp. salt
3 eggs
1 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup water
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Line a cookie sheet with
parchment paper and set aside. Combine all dry ingredients in mixing bowl. Add eggs and peanut butter, mixing well. Blend in oil and water until dough is smooth. Cover dough and allow to rest for about 20 minutes.
Roll dough out onto floured board to 1/2 inch thick and cut into desired shapes. Place on prepared cookie sheet and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, depending on size of dog treat. The biscuits will look light brown in color and will be very hard.
Customize your dog biscuits before baking by using a toothpick or the tip of a small paring knife to write their name. Garnish with ribbon.
HINT: When measuring peanut butter, line your measuring cup with plastic wrap for easy clean up. Also, wrap your rolling pin in plastic wrap to prevent any peanut oils from being absorbed into the wood of your rolling pin.
Bender and Scruffy scarf these things down and our little cat has been know to sneak off with a piece now and then. So give them a try. I'm sure your fur baby, no matter what size will love them!
(One side of the couch is just as good as the other for these guys to cuddle together!)
